Finnish singles chart #1s: 2000
I've reached the new millennium in my adventure across the Finnish #1 singles chart history!

While generally speaking the biggest hits are a split between overseas pop juggernauts and Finnish rock acts, the year 2000 is where hip-hop begins to gain a legitimate foothold in the Finnish charts and while we have a lot of overseas imports to thank for that to some degree, the key factor is the arrival of domestic rap music that you can actually take seriously. As is evident from the earlier years in the list, hip-hop had a massive image problem in Finland in the early 1990s as it became associated with novelty music and comedy trash, which ultimately more or less buried the genre from a cultural perspective once everyone grew out of the cheap jokes. The year 2000 sees the arrival of Fintelligens, the duo who's widely (and rightfully) credited as the heralds of the Finnish hip-hop renaissance - and the cross-border collaboration "Stockholm-Helsinki" lead by them is one of the year's best hits.
(sadly, novelty hip-hop does get another lease of life in the wave of all the critically acclaimed genre counterparts, and we have garbage like "Vitun suomirokki" hitting #1 still. But alas...)
