If one thing's evident from 1999, it's that moody guitar music is once again one of the most popular genres - and specifically the domestic kind. Metal in the charts has been a regular occurrence since the 1980s but we're about to reach the real mainstream adoption of metal as a form of pop music, with the continuing and ever-rising success of both bonafide metal acts and rock acts who are now less afraid to crunch some muscular guitars.
And amidst that, you've got all the cheery pop song phenomenons of 1999 that you'd expect, from Britney Spears and Mr Oizo to Lou Bega. Finland wasn't immune to fun bangers even if the charts were growing moodier. It's a real wild year of various sounds and themes running through, with a couple of gigantic pop culture events among them.
